Why painters hire towers instead of ladders

A ladder puts one hand on the rung and one on the brush. A tower gives you a full platform, guardrails on all four sides and somewhere to put the paint down. On a day rate that difference pays for itself in coverage alone — and it takes the argument about working at height off the table entirely.

Interior walls, ceilings and stairwells

A 750mm single width tower passes through a standard doorway and up most hallways without dismantling. Working over a flight of stairs is a different job: that needs a tower built to stand on the treads, which we do not carry — call us rather than improvising with packing under the legs.

Exterior render, fascias and soffits

A 4m or 6m mobile tower on lockable castors lets you work along an elevation and reposition without breaking the tower down. Stabilisers come as standard.

Quick jobs and multi-property rounds

The folding tower opens in about ten minutes and folds flat for the van. If you are painting three flats in a day, this is the one.

What comes with the tower

Every hire includes guardrails, toeboards, stabilisers, lockable castors and an assembly guide. Towers are inspected before they leave the yard.

Working safely

Towers supplied meet EN 1004-1. Anyone building, altering or dismantling a tower should be PASMA trained or working under the direct supervision of someone who is. Never move a tower with a person or materials on the platform, and always deploy the stabilisers before climbing.

Which tower do most painters hire?

For a standard London terrace, a 6m working height tower reaches the gutter line, and a 750mm wide platform passes through a side return or a hallway. If you are cutting in at high level all day and want somewhere to stand tools and tins, the 2.5m x 1.35m platform is worth the extra ground space. Every product page states the actual working height rather than the model name.

Can I use a tower indoors without marking the floor?

Yes. The castors are rubber-tyred and lock, and the towers we hire are the same units we send to occupied homes and offices every week. On finished floors most decorators put boards or a dust sheet under the castors — that is about protecting your own work, not a condition of hire.

Can I move the tower along the wall without dismantling it?

On a mobile tower, yes — unlock the castors, move it, lock them again, and check the stabilisers before you climb. Nobody should be on the tower while it is moved. On a long elevation that is the single biggest time saving a tower gives you over a ladder.

Why not just use a ladder?

For anything longer than a few minutes, a tower is faster and safer. On a ladder one hand holds you on, so you make more trips and you cannot put a tin down. A tower gives you a platform with a guardrail, somewhere to stand materials, and the ability to work along the wall rather than reposition every metre. The Work at Height Regulations also expect you to use the most suitable equipment, not the nearest one.

Can I leave the tower up overnight on an exterior job?

Yes, and most exterior hires do. Lock the castors, check the stabilisers, and consider the wind — a tower is a sail, and the taller it is the sooner wind becomes the deciding factor. Inspect it again before you climb the next morning; that is a requirement, not a courtesy.

How long do painters usually hire for?

A week is the minimum and covers most single-property jobs. Two weeks is common on a full exterior repaint where weather might interrupt you. Longer hires are cheaper per week, so if the job might run on it is usually better to book the longer period than to extend twice.
