The tower that suits a decorator working up a Victorian stairwell is not the tower that suits a contractor on a two-storey rear extension. These pages set out what each trade usually needs and why.

Height is fixed by the job, width is fixed by your access. Everything else comes after.

Step one

Height, measured not guessed

Measure to the highest point you need to reach and take off about two metres of arm reach. That figure is the working height to book — not the platform height, and not the model name on the sticker.

  • Single-storey soffit or a tall interior ceiling — around 4m
  • Two-storey terrace gutter — around 6m
  • Roofline on a two-storey house — 7m to 8m

Step two

Width, decided by your access

A standard UK internal door is around 762mm. A 750mm platform goes through it; a 1.35m platform does not. If any part of the route is a normal doorway, that settles the width before anything else does.

  • 1.35m — two operatives with materials, open ground outside

Step three

Build method, only if someone asks

If a method statement specifies advanced guardrail, you need an AGR tower — the guardrail goes in from the level below so nobody stands on an unprotected platform. On domestic work nobody will ask, and a standard tower built correctly is entirely legitimate.

Working heights are the figures we publish on each tower page, not model names. If your job sits between two, take the taller one.

Frequently asked questions

I do not know which tower my trade needs. Where do I start?

Start with the height, not the model. Measure to the highest point you need to reach and subtract roughly two metres of arm reach — that is your working height. Then pick the platform that fits your access: 750mm wide if it has to pass a doorway, 1.35m if two people need room to work. The trade pages here narrow it further.

Can I hire different towers for different parts of one job?

Yes, and it is often cheaper than compromising on one. A folding tower for the quick indoor work and a taller mobile tower for the elevation is a common combination. Put both in the same basket and they arrive on the same delivery.

My trade is not listed. Can I still hire?
