Can You Put A Scaffold Tower On Grass, Gravel Or A Slope?

Most conversations about towers are about height. Almost every genuine problem we hear about is about the ground.

A mobile tower is a free-standing structure carrying its whole load through four small contact points. Whatever is under those points has to take that load without moving, sinking or tilting — for the whole hire, not just for the first hour.

Grass and soft ground

You can stand a tower on grass, and people do it every day. The risk is not the grass, it is what happens over three days of use and a night of rain.

Castors and base plates concentrate a lot of weight into a very small area. On soft lawn that means they sink, and they rarely sink evenly. A tower that was level on Monday can be out of plumb by Wednesday, and out of plumb at four metres is a much bigger deal than out of plumb at ground level.

What helps:

  • Spread the load. Scaffold boards or proper sole boards under each leg turn a point

load into an area load.

  • Check it again, every day. Not a glance — a look at the level and a look at whether

the base plates have settled.

  • Watch the weather. Ground that was firm before rain is not the same ground after it.

If the lawn is genuinely waterlogged, the honest answer is that a tower is the wrong tool that week.

Gravel and loose surfaces

Gravel behaves like soft ground that also moves sideways. Base plates on gravel need something solid between them and the stones, and castors on gravel are close to useless — they will not roll and they will not sit still.

If the whole standing area is gravel, plan to build on boards and plan not to move the tower once it is up.

Slopes and steps

This is where it stops being a judgement call and becomes a rule.

A tower must be built plumb and level. On a slope, that means the legs on the low side have to be extended to bring the base level — which is exactly what adjustable legs are for, within the range the manufacturer allows. Beyond that range, you do not improvise: you do not pack the legs with bricks, offcuts or paving slabs, and you do not build on the slope and hope the stabilisers hold it.

For a genuine slope or a flight of steps you need a tower built for it — one with legs that adjust independently so the two sides can stand at different levels. Pavements, driveways and shared ground

Hard standing is the easy case, with two things worth checking:

  • The stabiliser footprint. Stabilisers need their full span. On a narrow frontage or

a shared path, that span may be the constraint that decides everything else.

  • Who owns the ground. Pavements, communal areas and controlled bays are not always

yours to stand on. Where the tower sits on a public footway, that is a conversation with the council, not with us.

Tell us at booking if either of these applies. It changes the delivery slot we give you, and it is far cheaper to plan for than to discover with a tower on the van.

Drains, covers and cellars

One that catches people out: an inspection cover, a drain, a light well or a coal-hole cover looks like solid ground and is not. Never put a leg on one. What is underneath is a void, and the load a tower puts through a single point is not what those covers were designed for.

The short version

Before you build, ask three questions about the ground:

  1. Will it take the load without sinking? If not, spread it with boards.
  2. Is it level, or can the legs make it level within their range? If not, you need

different equipment.

  1. Is there anything hollow under it? Drains, covers and voids are a no.
